Questions to ask at a first scoliosis appointment in Malaysia

Questions to Ask at Your First Scoliosis Appointment in Malaysia

The first clinic visit after a school referral or a new diagnosis should leave you with a clear picture: what was found, what happens next, and when to return. This page is a preparation checklist for that first visit. It is not a substitute for the visit itself.

This guide is for the first assessment visit (school-health referral, general orthopaedic clinic, or first conservative assessment). For a later spine-surgeon or highly specialized review, use the specialist-consultation guide.

Chiropractic Specialty Center® supports collaborative, informed patient care and coordinated medical or specialist referrals when indicated.

Records Worth Bringing

  • The school screening referral letter, if you have one
  • Previous standing spine X-rays (films or clear digital copies)
  • Reports that list Cobb angle, curve location, and maturity markers
  • Earlier scoliometer or posture notes
  • A short timeline of when uneven shoulders, waist, or ribs were first noticed
  • Current medicines and relevant medical history

If images are on a disc or portal, test the login before you leave home.

Core Questions

  1. What did today’s examination show?
  2. Is imaging needed now, and what type?
  3. What is the Cobb angle and curve pattern if measured?
  4. How much growth remains, and how was that estimated?
  5. When is the next review, and what would make us return sooner?
  6. Are there activity limits today?
  7. Can supportive non-surgical care sit alongside this monitoring plan?

Write the answers. A visit without a written next step is incomplete.

Extra Questions for Growing Children

  • How will we know if the curve is changing during the next growth period?
  • What should we watch at home between visits?
  • Who do we contact if new symptoms appear?

After the Appointment

  • Request a written summary.
  • File images and dates together.
  • Book the agreed follow-up.
  • Seek a second opinion if the plan is still unclear.

Frequently Asked Questions About the First Appointment

The questions below cover what families most often want to clarify before and during a first scoliosis appointment.

1. Do I need a referral for a private assessment?

Requirements vary. Some clinics accept direct appointments; others prefer a letter. Check first.

2. What if the public clinic waiting time is long?

Keep the public appointment. A private assessment can provide earlier information while you still attend the recommended public review.

3. Should I bring my child if there is no pain?

Yes. Many curves cause no pain. The visit is to set a baseline while growth remains.

4. Can I ask about supportive care at the first visit?

Yes. It is reasonable to ask whether registered physiotherapy or supportive chiropractic care can sit alongside monitoring when appropriate.

5. What if I do not understand the answers?

Ask for plainer language or a written summary. You should leave knowing the finding and the next date.

6. Is a second opinion acceptable?

Yes, especially if the plan is unclear or red-flag symptoms appear.

7. Where can I arrange assessment in Kuala Lumpur?

Details for both Chiropractic Specialty Center locations are on the Contact Us page.
