Your Child Was Referred After the School Scoliosis Screening: What Happens Next
A school referral letter after Malaysia’s Tahun 6 health screening does not mean your child has been given a final scoliosis diagnosis. It means a brief school check found a reason for a doctor to look more closely. This page explains what that check usually includes, what the letter does and does not mean, and the practical steps most families take next.
Chiropractic Specialty Center® supports collaborative, informed care and coordinated medical or specialist referrals when indicated. Private assessment is not a replacement for the public pathway named in the letter.
What the School Screening Usually Checks
The school check is a short posture and forward-bend observation under the Ministry of Health School Health Programme. It is not a standing X-ray and it does not measure a Cobb angle. The aim is to find children who may need a fuller examination.
A “positive” result only means further review is recommended. Many children who receive a letter later have mild asymmetry or a small curve that needs monitoring rather than urgent intervention.
What the Referral Letter Means
The letter is an official school-health recommendation. Keep it. Take it to the named clinic, usually a government orthopedic or pediatric orthopedic clinic.
The letter does not:
- confirm a Cobb angle
- decide whether a brace or surgery is needed
- cancel your right to ask questions
- stop you from seeking an additional private assessment
Public and private reviews can run side by side. One does not replace the other.
Practical Next Steps
- Read the letter and note the clinic name, any date, and what was written about the finding.
- Book the recommended public appointment as soon as you can.
- Gather previous spine images or clinic notes if they exist.
- Write a short timeline: when someone first noticed uneven shoulders, waist, or ribs.
- Prepare questions (see below and the related checklist).
- Attend the visit and ask for a written summary of the findings and the next review date.
If new weakness, numbness, bowel or bladder change, severe night pain, or breathing difficulty appears, seek medical care promptly rather than waiting for a routine slot.
Questions Worth Asking at the First Clinic Visit
- What did today’s examination show?
- Is imaging needed now, and if so, what type?
- Has a Cobb angle been measured, and what is the curve pattern?
- How much growth remains, and how was that estimated?
- When should we return, and what would make us return sooner?
- Are there activity limits right now?
- Can supportive non-surgical care sit alongside this monitoring plan?
Write the answers down. Unclear answers are a reason to ask for a written note or a second opinion.
How This Fits With Supportive Care
After a proper assessment, registered physiotherapy and supportive chiropractic care may sit alongside medical monitoring when the findings support that combination. No method is promised to reverse every structural curve or to replace specialist review when it is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions About School Screening Referrals
These are the questions parents raise most often in the days after a referral letter comes home. Each answer stands on its own, so you can read them in any order.
1. Does a school referral letter mean my child definitely has scoliosis?
No. The school check is a brief screen. Many referred children later have only mild asymmetry or a small curve that needs monitoring.
2. Must I use only the government clinic named in the letter?
You should attend the recommended public appointment. A private assessment may be added. The two pathways can run together.
3. How soon should I make the appointment?
As soon as practical. Early review gives a clearer baseline while your child is still growing.
4. Will my child need an X-ray?
That decision belongs to the examining doctor. Not every referred child needs immediate imaging.
5. Can supportive care be considered alongside the public pathway?
Yes. After assessment, non-surgical supportive care can sit alongside medical monitoring when clinically appropriate.
6. What if the public clinic has a long waiting time?
Keep the public appointment. You may arrange a private assessment for earlier information while still attending the recommended review.
7. Where can I get further information in Kuala Lumpur?
Assessment information for Chiropractic Specialty Center’s Bukit Damansara and Bandar Sri Damansara centers is on the Contact Us page.
